News writing style is just as important for sports reporting as it is for general news, business stories or any other journalistic work.

The advantage of sports writing is that you are allowed a little it more leeway in your choice of words. In crime or business writing, you are restricted in your use of adjectives and adverbs and are encouraged to focus more on nouns and verbs.

News

Sports writing, however, allows you to go to town in describing plays, the atmosphere, fans and other colorful aspects of a sporting event.

For this article, we will go through, step by step, how to write a straightforward sports report using quotes.

Ideally, any sports story would have quotes from the winners and losers. Indeed, many sports articles are written around what athletes say rather than what they have achieved on the field of play.

However, you also have sports articles written without quotes. When rookies learn how to write like a journalist, especially in sport, they are likely to come across the structure that we will show you here.

We will adapt the NBA game between Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers on April 1 as our example article.

1. Intro – the most important news aspect of a sports game is the score. Who won? How did they win and what effect did the victory have? Also important is whether we are writing from a Boston perspective or Cleveland. In this case, we will go with Cleveland.

“Cleveland Cavaliers lost 98-96 to the Boston Celtics after Delonte West’s sank two free throws in the final seconds, dropping three and a half games behind the Pistons for the best record in the Eastern Conference.”

2. More info – The above is enough for those who have a passing interest in the sport. However, NBA fans would want more information and you could give it to them in one or two paragraphs.

“The Cavaliers were without star player LeBron James, suffering from a knee injury, while the Celtics were minus Paul Pierce. Gerald Green led the way for Celtics with 25 points while Kendrick Perkins had 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Cavaliers, for whom Larry Hughes scored 24 with Sasha Pavlovic scoring 17, have already qualified for the play-offs while Boston are out of the running.”

3. Quote – This is where you can provide a quote from the coach or a key player from both teams. You can precede each saying with a lead-in paragraph or go straight into the quote.

“Celtic forward Al Jefferson, said: ‘They were missing their best player and we were missing our best play. We just stuck in there.’

Cavs coach Mike Brown said James’ absence was a key factor in their loss.

‘We miss LeBron. We miss LeBron every time he doesn’t play. He’s our guy,’ said Brown.”

4. The rest – Once you got the main information and key quotes out of the way, you can go on to describe the game. Even better would be to describe just one or two plays and include more quotes.

The thinking behind sports articles is that people would have watched the game on TV anyway and would not want boring game description. Therefore, quotes from the people who matter, such as athletes and coaches, would offer better reading value.

There are many types of sports news writing that is offered around the world everyday. We have merely showed you its simplest form. Certainly, it is a rewarding form of news writing for journalists who love their sport. And the structure they use allow them to adapt their skills to any type of journalism writing.

There is one newspaper that football supporters look forward to reading more than any other. Most towns and cities up and down the country have a Saturday night sports paper. These newspapers are bang up to date with all the latest news from the day’s football action. They are full of match reports and contain articles and coverage of all the local football teams.

In terms of football news, the Saturday evening sports paper has everything a football fan needs. It includes a full rundown of all the football results, detailed match reports as well all the latest league tables. The fixtures for the following weeks are also included. If your team is enjoying a good run of form and results, it will make enjoyable reading.

News

Many of these sports papers are printed on coloured newspaper such as green or pink which makes them easily identifiable. It is no surprise that because of their colour they usually end up with names such as the Sports Pink or the Green Un. As soon as these publications hit the streets you can see football fans swarm around the street seller, kiosk or newsagent eager to get their hands on a copy. In terms of sports related newspapers this is as fresh and up to date as it gets.

For many supporters, it is all part of attending a football match on a Saturday. The sports papers are usually on sale around one hour after the games finish. Some people even refuse to go home until they have a copy. Once they are armed with their soccer news fix they will enjoy mulling over the events of the day and reading expert football analysis in print.

In recent years some regional newspapers have decided to scrap their Saturday night sports paper. This was due to the growth of the internet and football news websites. Newspapers also have their own websites which can publish everything digitally instead of in print. Not everyone has access to the internet and even those that do would prefer to read their sports paper in a traditional printed format.

Despite the loss of some Saturday evening sports papers, plenty of others are still going strong. For the latest post match football news, reports and analysis they simply cannot be beaten. These sports newspapers are traditional among followers of the game who will not welcome their demise. Regardless of digital alternatives the vast majority of football fans will always be keen to keep their favourite sports paper.

I am going to talk about two of my favorite sport magazines and why I consider them to be my favorite two. I will also provide a brief history of them as well for the history buffs.

The first magazine I am going to talk about is Sporting News. This magazine started publishing in 1886 and still going strong today. It has 540,000 subscribers, including myself. In 2008 it went to a bi-weekly publishing schedule. At first, I was little disappointed that they changed from weekly publishing to a bi-weekly publishing. I don’t necessarily like change, but who does? But I do understand why they changed, for them to compete with other magazines they had update their publishing schedule. Also for the magazine to keep updating, they launched in 2008 a daily online newspaper named, Sporting News Today. They cover the following major sports: Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Football League, the National Hockey League, college football and basketball, and NASCAR. They also cover many other sports as well.

News

I like the readability of the articles and usually that have an interview with a coach or player. I also like that they have preview issues of the different sports season. I will probably be getting my football ones soon, just in time for the upcoming college and pro seasons. They also publish issues on specific sports before the season starts, which is there yearbook issues. So, for the upcoming college and NFL seasons, these issues just focus on these two sports. There are separate issues for college and the NFL. There is in depth coverage, including rosters, team statistics, predictions for the upcoming season and more. You can usually find these special issue at your local grocery or drug store; if not you can always go their website and order. If you order online, the shipping is fairly quick, you get them in about a week’s time.

My other favorite sport magazine to read, is Sports Illustrated. In my opinion, Sports Illustrated is the most popular and recognized name in the United States and most likely internationally as well. It was founded in 1954 and has over three million subscribers. I would say that is a lot of brand recognition. In addition to being known for their excellent sports coverage, they are also know for the annual Swimsuit issue. I like to read SI for their good coverage of the different sports and really good quality of writing. I also look forward to reading the Point After column and getting the Sportsman of the Year issue near the end of the year. If want good quality sporting news coverage, you should pick up a copy of these fine publications and see why I enjoy them so much.
